Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg
Western friendliness and sophisticated attractions await visitors to these prairie cities. Regina boasts a vast central park as the setting for government, the arts, and higher education. Fast-growing Saskatoon, with stakes in mining and high tech, thrives beside the South Saskatchewan. Winnipeg has long been the gateway to the prairies and, with more than half Manitoba's population, it is the provincial hub of commerce and culture.
Regina
Saskatchewan's capital city has come a long way since it was born as Pile 0'Bones in 1882. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police headquarters, Regina's most renowned institution, was established in the same year. Today, the RCMP Depot and Museum on Dewdney Avenue West tells the story of the force from its inception as the North West Mounted Police in 1873. Visitors are welcome at the drills, parades, and sunset ceremonies staged year-round at the RCMP Training Academy. One of North America's largest urban parks, the 930-hectare Wascana Centre encompasses an artificial lake and many of Regina's key attractions: the Legislative Building, the Royal Saskatchewan natural history museum, the University of Regina, the MacKenzie Art Gallery, a performing arts center, and the boyhood home of Canada's 13th prime minister, John Diefen-baker (1895-1979).
Saskatoon
Saskatchewan's largest, fastest growing city is known as "the city of bridges" for its seven spans over the South Saskatchewan River. The city has enhanced its riverside setting with parks and promenades. Notable sites include the castlelike 1930s Bessborough Hotel on the west bank and the University of Saskatchewan buildings on the east bank. Other points of interest include: the Western Development Museum, which enshrines a prairie "boom town" from the early 1900s; the Mendel Art Gallery, with works by Group of Seven artists Lawren Harris and A.Y. Jackson; and two museums devoted to the culture and traditions of the Ukrainian settlers. The Little Stone School House, Saskatoon's first school and oldest building, is on the university campus. Theater companies and a symphony orchestra keep the local arts scene lively.
Winnipeg
Home to many nationalities and cultures, Manitoba's capital began where the Red and Assiniboine rivers meet. The Forks National Historic Site celebrates the importance of this crossroads in western Canada's development. The past comes alive at other sites such as Riel House, which honors the Metis leader Louis Riel (1844-85), and Dalnavert, the restored 1895 home of Manitoba premier, Sir Hugh Macdonald (1850-1929). Modern Winnipeg is a bustling, sprawling center with a revitalized downtown area. Within reach of Portage and Main, Winnipeg's famed intersection, visitors can explore the restaurants, boutiques, and flea markets of the Exchange District. At the heart of the city's cultural life, the Centennial Centre embraces the Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature, and the Centennial Concert Hall, the base for the city's symphony orchestra, ballet and opera companies. Winnipeg's renowned Manitoba Theatre Centre is located nearby.
