Georgian Triangle
The Georgian Triangle is a four-season vacation destination-a  lovely, serene corner of Georgian Bay that stretches from Owen Sound  past the Blue Mountains (where the Niagara Escarpment provides a hazy  blue silhouette over the towns) up the coast of Nottawasaga Bay to  Christian Island. Home to Canadian icons Tom Thomson and Billy Bishop  and steeped in shipping and military lore, the area combines all the  elements of the perfect holiday-spectacular scenery, natural wonders,  museums stacked with treasures of the past, fine dining, and plenty of  outdoor attractions.
Collingwood [E6] An almost mystic sense of spirituality  pervades Collingwood's Scenic Caves Nature Preserve, where some of the  caves and grottos have fissures so deep the snow never melts. The  exhibits at the Bygone Days Heritage Village have artifacts, vehicles,  and 29 pioneer buildings. Blue Mountain Resort offers alpine and water  slides, golf, tennis, and an alpine skiing complex consisting of 33  trails, 15 chairlifts, and a snowboard park. The area is famous for Blue  Mountain pottery, made from local red clay.
Midland [B8] Midland is set in pretty parklands and boasts  superb freshwater boating with many large marinas. The Martyr's Shrine  is dedicated to the Jesuit missionaries who worked among the Hurons in  the 17th century. This cradle of Christianity in Ontario features a  panoramic view of Midland Bay and beautiful gardens. Sainte-Marie among  the Hurons is a reconstruction of the first European community in  Ontario, a 17th-century palisaded fort complete with costumed  interpreters in summer. Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre is over 1,000 hectares  of wetlands, woodlands, and wildlife open year-round.
Owen Sound [D1]
Flanked by the limestone cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment, Owen  Sound is the regional and cultural center of Grey and neighboring Bruce  counties. The Billy Bishop Museum is located in the boyhood home of the  World War I flying ace, and holds aviation artifacts from both world  wars and an Avro Arrow interceptor display. Airplane sightseeing tours  of the city and Georgian Bay are offered by the local flying club.  Harrison Park, set in 45 hectares of scenic rolling parkland in the  heart of the city, has waterfowl ponds with descendants of swans donated  by King George VI. The Owen Sound Marine-Rail Heritage Museum, a former  CNR station, has archives plus marine and rail artifacts. Story Book  Park is a theme park where nursery rhymes and fairy tales come alive,  and the Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery has exhibits of the works of  both the famous Canadian landscape painter and his peers, the Group of  Seven.
Penetanguishene [A8] Abenaki for "Place of the Rolling White  Sands," this town is a haven for geology and marine buffs. Geological  features here include boulder fields, sand dunes, kettle lakes, and  bluffs. Discovery Harbour features a re-created 19th-century British  naval base, complete with two replica schooners manned by costumed crew.  The Centennial Museum, housed in an 1875 general store and lumber  office, has artifacts and photos of the logging boom era, farm  machinery, and the first car in Simcoe County, a 1901 Oldsmobile. The  spacious cruise boat MS Georgian Queen visits Giant's Tomb Island and  tours some of the area's 30,000 other islands.
Wasaga Beach [E7]
Wasaga Beach calls itself the "World's Longest Freshwater  Beach," with 14 km of sandy coastline along Georgian Bay. The Wasaga  Beach Provincial Park has 141 hectares of beach and picnic areas, while  Wasaga Water-world has serpentine and high-speed slides, a thermal  whirlpool, and paddleboats. Nancy Island Historic Site is a memorial to  the British supply ship shelled by Americans and sunk in the Nottawasaga  River in 1814.
