Northern Ontario
Built on gold, silver, zinc, copper, and iron ore, many of the  cities with roots in the Canadian Shield along the northern shores of  lakes Huron and Superior have retooled themselves as tourism  destinations, offering everything from hands-on science exploration to  music to wilderness getaways. Highway 17, along the north shore of Lake  Superior, has been designated by Ontario as part of the Great Lakes  Heritage Coast, which begins in Port Severn on Georgian Bay, and passes  through Sault Ste. Marie on the Saint Mary's River all the way to  Thunder Bay.
Kapuskasing [A6] Known as "The Model Town of the North,"  Kapuskasing is home to The Ron Morel Memorial Museum, a museum housed in  a refurbished 1919 steam engine, two railway coaches, and a caboose.  The museum collects memorabilia, two working model train sets, and  exhibitions of photographs, documents, and artifacts related to  Kapuskasing's history.
Kirkland Lake [C8] Gold was discovered here when prospector  Bill Wright spied something glittering in a rock outcropping in July  1911. Kirkland Lake soon became one of the largest gold-producing areas  in Canada. Today, the Macassa mine is the last gold mine operating, with  the deepest single-lift mine hoisting shaft in the western hemisphere:  2.2 km. Mine tours are available. ©Interpretative exhibits on the  history of northern Ontario including mining, prospecting, geology, and  wildlife can be seen at the Museum of Northern History, in the home of  onee-famous prospector Sir Harry Oakes. The Miners' Memorial Monument  pays tribute to the men of the deeps in a 9.7-m-high black granite  statue with five life-size figures.
Sault Ste. Marie [E4] A modern international city of 81,000,  Sault Ste. Marie is home to the world's busiest locks, directing  oceangoing vessels with cargoes of iron ore and grain. The city's  history is recounted in the Sault Ste. Marie Museum, while the MS  Norgama, the last ship built for passenger travel on the Great Lakes,  has been converted into a museum of marine history. The Canadian  Bushplane Museum has a display honoring Canada's first woman in  space-Dr. Roberta Bondar. ®The scenic Agawa Canyon Tour Train is the  most popular attraction in "The Soo." Accessible only by rail, the  scenic canyon, about 180 km north of Sault Ste. Marie, is about 20 km  long with walls 175 m at the highest point and only 15 m wide at its  narrowest point.
Sudbury [E7] Sudbury's importance as a mining center is  captured in the Big Nickel-a 9-m-high 1951 commemorative coin. Once a  community totally dependent on mining (the surrounding Canadian Shield  landscape harbors some of the richest ore deposits in the world),  Sudbury has become a major center for tourism, education, business, and  government. With over 1,200 km of trails, it also has the largest  snowmobile trail system in Ontario. Visitors can also tunnel through the  Canadian Shield at Science North, the largest tourist attraction in  northern Ontario.
Timmins [B7] This large mining town has a large number of  industry-based attractions such as the famous underground gold mine  tour, where visitors can try their hand at panning for gold. The Shania  Twain Centre includes memorabilia, live concert simulations, a backstage  concert experience, and interactive musical exhibits from Timmins' most  famous native. ®The 50 km Timmins Recreation Trail System, suitable for  walking and cycling, connects the community's historical and natural  sites. Centered on the Gillies Lake Conservation Area, the trail network  links to the beaches and trails at Hersey Lake and the parks and trails  around Porcupine Lake.
