Muskoka Lakes
Aland of endless blue lakes, countless islands, plentiful  streams, proud stands of birch and maple, and myriad windswept rocks-the  wild beauty and vibrant autumn palette of the Muskoka Lakes inspired  many of the Group of Seven. Today, Muskoka still attracts many artists  and craftspeople to reside in the area, and their fall studio tours make  great weekend excursions. Like its neighbor to the south, Huronia,  Muskoka is prime cottage country for southern Ontarians. Therefore, this  outdoor playground has no shortage of resorts and year-round  recreational activities: fishing, hiking, cycling, boating, camping,  cross-country skiing, ice fishing, dog sledding, and snowmobiling are  all good bets.
Bala [E4] Situated at the union of Lake Muskoka and Moon River,  Bala's scenic attractions include two waterfalls and eight bridges  linking Portage Island to the town. Bala's Museum features "Memories of  Lucy Maud Montgomery," honoring the author who summered here in 1922,  and used Muskoka as the setting for her novel The Blue Castle. Bala is  also the Cranberry Capital of Ontario-celebrated annually in October  with a cranberry festival.
Bracebridge [D6]
With 22 waterfalls, Bracebridge is believed to have more falls  than any other municipality in Canada. This resort town is well-known  for being Santa Claus' summer home (the town is situated on the 45th  parallel, or halfway between the equator and the North Pole): Santa's  Village and Sportsland offers over 30 rides and attractions including a  roller coaster sleigh ride, a riverboat ride, go-karts, mini-golf, and  mountain-bike trails.
Huntsville [A6]
Gateway to the Lake of Bays, Hunstville began as a logging  town, but by the early 1900s tourists arriving by rail and steamship  gave rise to numerous resorts. One of the earliest, Deerhurst, has been  in operation for over a century. The Lion's Lookout, located on a hill  near downtown, has a wonderful panoramic view of Fairy Lake and the  surrounding area. The region's glorious fall colors are at their peak  from mid-September to early October. ® Muskoka Heritage Place is the  home of the Muskoka Pioneer Village and the Huntsville and Lake of Bays  Railway. Here costumed interpreters re-create life in the late 1800s,  complete with a ride on a 1928 steam train. Arrowhead Provincial Park  provides camping and beaches nearby.
Parry Sound [A1] The birthplace of hockey player Bobby Orr,  Parry Sound began life as a lumber town named for Lion's Lookout in  Huntsville Arctic explorer Sir William Edward Parry. Today it's a  vacation center offering sightseeing cruises and flights through and  above 30,000 islands— the largest concentration of islands in the world.  There is excellent fishing in Georgian Bay, and scuba diving to various  sunken vessels in the bay is a popular pastime. The observation tower  in Tower Hill Park presents spectacular views of the bay and the town.  The District Museum at the foot of the tower features histories of First  Nations, trapping, logging, agriculture, and shipping.
Port Carling [C4-D4]
Muskoka's "Hub of the Lakes" is located at the heart of Cottage  Country, and links southernmost Lake Muskoka with lakes Rosseau and  Joseph. Its locks provide the only water link between the lakes for over  25,000 boats in the immediate area. The Muskoka Lakes Museum displays  the impressive history of boat building in the area. During its boom  years until 1968, Port Carling's master boat builders created the famous  Seabirds wooden pleasure crafts and the Fairmiles ships of World War  II. On even-numbered years the town is the home of the Muskoka | Lakes  Association Antique Boat Show.
