Last Mountain Lake
Aprime vacation destination, Last Mountain Lake lies within  easy reach of Regina. The 97-km-long lake is renowned for its walleye,  northern pike, carp, and perch. Rowan's Ravine Provincial Park is ideal  for sailing and swimming, while Last Mountain Lake National Wildlife  Area is a bird-watcher's paradise. Farther north, Manitou Beach on the  shores of Little Manitou Lake-known as the "Lake of the Healing Waters"  to early Native peoples-offers invigorating days at an up-to-date spa  and entertaining evenings at a dance hall dating from the 1920s.
Douglas Provincial Park
[E1] This prairie oasis on Lake Diefenbaker offers  opportunities for sailing, windsurfing, and water skiing. Several nature  trails reveal the park's diverse environments. The 2.5 km Juniper  Nature Trail crosses aspen woodlands, grasslands, and sand dunes. The 12  km loop of the Wolf Willow Trail offers lovely lake views. Just south  of the park, the Qu'Appelle Dam, the secondary dam of the South  Saskatchewan River Project, controls the waters of the Qu'Appelle River.
Elbow [E1] A 1908 schoolhouse is now a museum. Next door, a  replica of a sod dwelling contains a wrought-iron stove, a hand-cranked  record player, and other items treasured by early homesteaders. ® South  of Elbow, the Mistusinne Cairn, a fragment of a 362 t rock sacred to the  Cree, is all that could be saved before the Lake Diefenbaker inundation  of the 1960s. The cairn overlooks the spot where the rest of the rock  lies lost in the lake's depths.
Last Mountain Lake National Wildlife Area [C5] North America's  oldest bird sanctuary, this 10 km2 wetland preserve has served as a  haven for migrating birds since 1887. Some 75,000 sandhill cranes and  400,000 geese fly in during the spring and fall migrations. Other  transient visitors include white pelicans, double-crested cormorants,  and rare whooping cranes. Walking trails and observation lookouts enable  easy exploration of this sanctuary.
Manitou Beach [A4]
This Little Manitou Lake resort has been a vacation playground  since the 1920s. The 19 km2 lake, fed by an underground stream, is three  times saltier than the ocean, enabling swimmers to float effortlessly  on the surface. Native peoples and homesteaders believed the lake waters  possessed curative powers. Today's visitors find renewed vigor at  Manitou Springs Mineral Spa, which provides heated indoor pools, fitness  and therapeutic facilities. Next to the spa, Danceland hosts the best  of bands and singers as it has since 1928. The original maple hardwood  floor, set on cushions of horsehair, is fine for tripping the light  fantastic.
Nokomis [C5] In the early 1900s, the postmistress picked the  town name from the Longfellow poem Hiawatha. The museum, housed in the  old CN station, preserves family histories and photographs. Just behind  the museum, Junction City 1907 is a replica of a turn-of-the-century  prairie town.
Rowan's Ravine Provincial Park [E5]
At this lakeside getaway, two sand beaches guarantee great  swimming. Sailing is popular here, too. A marina, at the south end of  the park, is sheltered in a beautiful, secluded harbor.
Watrous [B4] A medieval stained-glass window with over 2,000  segments adorns the west wall of All Saints Anglican Church. The window  was removed and buried for safekeeping during the English Civil War of  the 1640s. In the early 1900s, it was unearthed and brought to Watrous. A  Watrous-to-Young walking trail crosses prairie grassland and passes The  Big Rock, a 3.6-m-high and 8-m-long remnant from the last ice age.
Wynyard [A8] The Frank Cameron Museum shows relics from  Wynyard's past. The community is a jumping-off point for bird-watchers  and hunters heading for nearby Quill Lakes.
