Southeastern Saskatchewan
Except for the rugged, wooded upland of Moose Mountains, the gently rolling land in this region is almost all farming country. It was the first part of the province to be settled. Pioneer homesteaders from eastern Canada, the United States, and Europe brought the plows that broke the region's fertile soil. Today, this sector of Saskatchewan contributes to the abundance of wheat and other grains for which the province is renowned. In mid-August, the fields here and across the grain belt turn from green to gold, adding a warm glow to the autumn landscape.
Cannington Manor Provincial Historic Park
[B6] Guides costumed in Victorian garb tell the story of English aristocrats who tried to transplant their genteel lifestyle to this prairie locale in the 1880s. A visitors center features exhibits about Canning-ton Manor's founder, Capt. Edward Michell Pierce, whose colony expired shortly after he died in 1886. The site has three original buildings and four reconstructions, which is filled with antiques and early farming gear. The grounds once served as a playing field for cricket matches.
Carlyle [B6] Carlyle Rusty Relics Museum and Tourist Information Centre, housed in the old Canadian National Railway station, shows pioneer items including primitive dental instruments from the early 1900s. White Bear Powwow, a prime event, is held near Carlyle.
Estevan [E4] Known as Energy City, Estevan is a foremost Saskatchewan producer of oil and coal. Tours cover three energy sites: the Luscar Ltd. coal mines, Boundary Dam Power Station (Canada's largest lignite-fired thermal facility), and the environmentally advanced coal-fired Shand Power Station. Visitors can inspect Shand Greenhouse, which uses the station's waste heat to grow tree seedlings and ground cover for reclaimed mine sites. IS Estevan is blessed with 2,540 hours of sunshine a year, more than any other city in Canada. The city's name honors two Canadian Pacific Railway executives-George Stephen and William van Horne-who brought CPR's Soo Line here in the 1890s. The restored North West Mounted Police fort, beside the Estevan National Exhibition Centre, evokes frontier days.
Moose Mountain Provincial Park [A6] Set atop a wooded, hilly plateau, this 388 km2 park has welcomed vacationers since the early 1900s. Today, this year-round getaway offers fishing, golf, tennis, hiking, horse riding, and cross-country skiing. Accommodations range from campsites to the deluxe Kenosee Lake Inn. A superslide at the entrance makes a big splash with kids and teens. An Elizabethan-style visitors center, built in 1931, describes the park's plant and animal life, which includes moose and elk.

Weyburn [B1] The Wheel of Progress, displayed in the town hall, celebrates Weyburn's past and present. This community symbol is a mosaic, 4 m in diameter and weighing over 900 kg. Today, Weyburn is a service center for local grain farmers and cattlemen. Turning Curling Museum has 75 curling stones and other treasures bound to delight enthusiasts of the sport. Soo Line Historical Museum displays the 5,000 items in the Charles Wilson Silver Collection, said to be the largest individual collection of its kind in Canada.
О Some say Weyburn got its name in 1893 from some Scottish railway builders who called the Souris River a "wee burn." Writer W. 0. Mitchell, who spent his boyhood in Weyburn, called it "Crocus" in his beloved novel Who Has Seen the Wind?
